Urban Spaces
Scarlet, Age 17
This piece is inspired by the Urban Scenes around Brighton. I started the process by creating a file on photoshop, editing and compiling textile samples that I had previously made and images that I had taken. This was printed onto 3 metres of fabric that I cut out and made the base of the coat. This was finished with quilting, which is a technique that really enhances texture that helps represent the theme of Urban Scenes. I've always been inspired by streetwear, in particular, the coats and oversized garments that represents this style. This is where my idea of making an ankle-length coat came from. When quilted, the stitching creates this beautiful continuous line across the whole garment. During the process of making the coat, I made it reversible to highlight not only the collaged fabric but also the quilting stitching beneath. This piece can be presented on a mannequin.
