Miss Thoughtful
Charlie, Year 7
This is one of 60+ of his portraits, all the same size, in a series inspired by 'heads' in museums in Barcelona and Rome. He was inspired by the rotting wood, peeling layers of paint and shiny carved stone, and wanted to bring the old heads back to life. He emphasised and exaggerated the patterns he could see in the sculptures, especially the wood grain and decay. They all have names and he likes to put them in pairs. He carefully mixed a flat colour for the background that he thought reflected the personality and made all of them at the kitchen table using his big old suitcase of materials. His favourite technique is using all grades of pencil with oil pastels. He gave her a religious halo around to make her stand out.
